Bertsolaritza will receive the highest level of protection afforded under Regional Law; the measure will take effect in the autumn.

In Navarre, bertsolaritza will be designated as an asset of Intangible Cultural Interest. Thanks to a decision by the Government, bertsolaritza will receive the highest level of protection under the Regional Law on the Cultural Heritage of Navarre.

The association Nafarroako Bertsozale Elkartea requested the designation at the beginning of the year, presenting a descriptive report. This report included an analysis of the framework of the oral tradition in Navarre and a descriptive analysis of bertsolaritza, also setting out its importance and uniqueness, the risks it faces, the need for its protection and some safeguarding measures.

The documentation was completed with a report by Alfredo Asiain Ansorena, ethnolinguist and technical director of the Archive of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Navarre.

The measure will come into effect this autumn, at the end of the processing of the report prepared by the Navarre Council of Culture.
